Fiberglass/Gelcoat/Paint Technician

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Technicians plan fiberglass repairs by evaluating damage and makes repairs using appropriate marine fiberglass techniques.  Prepares wood, fiberglass, and metal surfaces for painting. Paints parts, equipment, interior and exterior of vessels utilizing brushes, spray guns and rollers. The Technician’s title may be specific to their trade and titled as such (Technician (Mechanical), Technician (Electrical), Technician (Painter), Technician (Carpentry), Technician (Rigger) etc.)

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Surface preparation to include stripping, scuffing, sanding, masking and priming surfaces
  • Ability to match and spray gel coat
  • Refinishes small to large areas of boats by applying gel coat and/or paint, sanding and prep, mixing gel-coat and/or paints, matching colors, spray painting primer and finishing coats
  • Fill cracks and gouges, shaping, filing, grinding, sandblasting, sanding, and fairing surfaces, working with various resins, glass fibers, and fillers applying appropriate composite repair techniques and tools
  • Apply coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer, as appropriate, to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures of boats
  • Utilize hand and power tools including but not limited to; scraper, wire brush, needle gun, grinder, pneumatic chipper, basic tools, sand paper, etc.
  • Knowledge of the requirements for varnish prepping and sealing and the products utilized
  • Repair and fabricate composite parts
  • Interact with customers and respond to customer questions as they relate to paint and varnish applications
  • Meet environmental requirements and best marina practices in acquisition, application, removal and disposal of paint, paint waste or residuals in accordance with OSHA requirements and federal and state laws
  • Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines

 

TECHNICAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • 5 years’ experience preferred
  • Previous experience with gel coat and fiberglass
  • Awlgrip training a plus
  • Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Basic boat handling skills preferred
